Melbourne Cup Animation
This animation was for an assignment at my university. The main task was to create a design to give our audiences a message about a certain event, hopefully sparking a thought on how their action has impacted this certain issue.
For what I have chosen, I decided to focus on a major problem in the Melbourne Cup: the horse racing industry. One of the serious issues relates to the treatments of horses, where they are forced into huge labour for our entertainment; ultimately resulting to numerous injuries and deaths at such young ages (as young as 5 years old).
The animation focuses on a human representing as a horse. They share their experience on the issue on the environment they grew up, the treatment given to people, and the harm and demise they endure.
Process: Research and Ideation
During this stage, we were to look into the matter, and see how we could design our piece. For me, I decided to create an animation, it was the matter on how I was going to showcase the animation.
In this stage, I was also going to implement the idea of gambling and alcohol as some additional problems of the Melbourne Cup.
Prototype and Finalisation
This is where we experimented how the piece could come along together. I decided to create an animation about a human talking about their experiences with the horse racing industry in the position of the horse.
We were also to create two other outcomes: One being a way to bring people into the piece. The other being what to do after watching the animation. I decided to make a poster that will have a QR code to scan so the audience can easily scan it with their phone. This will redirect them to the video. The final outcome was a petition to raise enough votes to bring attention on the harm of horses, and to bring a different course of action to the industry other than bringing harm to the horses.
